BREXIT AND THE POSSIBLE CONSEQUENCES — dbh WHITE PAPER

In a referendum held on 23 June 2016, the British people voted for Brexit with a majority of approximately 52 percent. The word "Brexit" is a combination of "Britain" and "exit". This made-up word represents the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union after being a member for over 40 years — the first country to do so.

For now, everything will stay the same: The British do not leave the European Union with immediate effect and EU regulations continue to apply to the UK. The exit clause sets a two-year time limit for the so-called divorce proceedings to be completed, during which time the relationship between the EU Member States and the UK must be negotiated.

BREXIT AND CUSTOMS HANDLING

One of the issues that needs to be resolved over the next two years is how customs will be processed between EU Member States and the UK in the future. Preferential trade following the UK's exit from the EU must also be negotiated. The UK currently still enjoys the competitive advantages offered by preferential agreements that the EU has concluded with many countries.

POSSIBLE SCENARIOS AT A GLANCE

Experts at dbh Logistics IT AG (dbh) took a look into the crystal ball and have prepared a comprehensive white paper on the possible future constructs between the European Union and the UK. The document presents and explains a number of conceivable models and their solutions with regard to future customs handling and preference agreements between the EU and the UK.
