S/4HANA Migration with dbh

Why should you consider migrating to S/4HANA now?

At the end of 2027, free maintenance for SAP ECC systems with EHP 6 and higher will expire. For older versions even the original deadline of 31.12.2025 applies. That said, there’s no better time than today to start planning your company’s S/4HANA migration.

Why? The changeover is much more than a technical 1:1 update with a new user interface. SAP’s strategy is to consolidate and simplify functions in S/4HANA. At the same time, in accordance with the principle of “Keep the Core Clean”, individual adjustments to the actual SAP core should no longer be possible in the future.

This strategy also has implications for foreign trade and shipping, which you should consider early on. The previous foreign trade components SD-FT and MM-FT are not replaced in all functions by the new International Trade module.

Background knowledge S/4HANA

What are the main changes in foreign trade and shipping?

  • The use of the business partner (BP and BP Roles) instead of the customer and vendor becomes mandatory.
  • The material numbers are omitted from the material master.
  • In the SD/MM documents, the foreign trade data is omitted and is only available to a limited extent in downstream processes. It is not possible to maintain missing data in documents.
  • The SAP ERP solution for WUP is discontinued without replacement – preference processing is no longer supported under SAP S/4HANA
  • The tariffing was changed and offers among other things a simple support for the turn of the year
  • The LE-TRA module for handling transport logistics is no longer required.
  • Some fields that were previously used for custom developments can no longer be adapted.

How are you preparing? Tips for preparatory activities

Clarify what your future SAP system landscape should look like: On-premise in your own data center, S/4HANA in the cloud or a mixture in a hybrid system landscape? You can find more information about the differences here.

Weigh which migration path to take: Greenfield (a completely new system with new processes and configurations) or Brownfield (creating the new system and converting the data and processes to S/4HANA)?

What happens with your individual adaptations and extensions? Check whether you want to take Z transactions with you into S/4HANA. In our experience, it pays to go back as close to the standard as possible to simplify migration.

Do you also see the change as an opportunity for optimization: Do your digital processes still meet your requirements? Can improvements still be made here? Which manual processes can be usefully digitized within the scope of the project?

Don’t just concentrate on the technical changeover, but bring IT and business together at the planning stage!

Analyze your existing and required customs, foreign trade and shipping processes to optimally close emerging gaps and benefit from process optimization. For this purpose, we offer you an extensive range of SAP plug-ins and corresponding consulting services.

How much time do you have to plan for the conversion of our plug-ins?

This is very individual and depends on which migration variant you choose and how many dbh plug-ins you have in use. In addition, the degree of customization of your plug-ins also plays a role.

As a guideline, you can allow about 8-12 weeks for implementation after technical and functional clarification. By the way, don’t worry about multiple plug-ins – the total effort does not multiply.

What we strongly advise, however, is that you also plan for an extensive testing phase before go-live.
