What are preferential agreements?

The European Community/European Union has made  preferential agreements  with a range of different countries or country groups (e. g. the EFTA states, the Balkan countries but also Mexico, Chile, South Africa and South Korea).  Customs advantages  (preferences) were agreed upon as part of these preferential agreements. This means that it is possible to import goods into a country with which this type of agreement has been made either without having to pay any duty, or at least with a reduced rate of duty. The prerequisite for this is that the goods meet certain  origin rules  that are defined within the preferential agreement.

Information on the applicable preferential agreements and the respective origin rules can be found on the  Customs website  of the German Federal Ministry of Finance (BMF).
